You know it and I know it – even practicing regular cleaning, your wetsuit, drysuit, undergarments, hoods and gloves can stink over time. You can wash, enzyme, hang outdoors but still a tell-tale odor lingers. I can’t stand that smell. You might feel the same.
When we were at DEMA 2014 last fall, I came upon a booth for a product called Pau Pilau. I was told it works better than enzyme cleaners – Pau Pilau actually digests bacteria and harmful organisms that cause the stink. Armed with samples, I took the product home.
Over the past few months, we gave Pau Pilau a thorough testing. First, we gave a few old wetsuits and gloves a sniff test. Marks of 6/10, 7/10 and 9/10 were recorded by our sniffers, 10 being the worst. Next, we soaked the dive gear in the diluted mixture of water and Pau Pilau, and hung it up to dry. Once dry, we gave it the sniff test again. All sniffers recorded 0/10 in the smell factor. Awesome!
Our next challenge? Undergarments!
As we dive the Pacific Northwest, we wear warm, fleecy undergarments, and high tech base layers under our drysuits. Once topside, we wash them with various enzyme cleaners. We decided to give Pau Pilau a whirl on our Fourth Element undergarments, which were starting to resist the effects of enzyme cleaners. Mind you, the Pau Pilau product is not supposed to be washed off. Undeterred, we poured some in the wash cycle and let the machine do its thing. One wash cycle and one dry cycle later, our undergarments no longer had the smell of enzyme and dive gear stink. Our conclusion? The stuff works, really, really well.
Here are some facts from the Pau Pilau website:
- Pau Pilau is an economical, easy-to-use concentrate that will penetrate into the pores of the neoprene and digest all foul smelling organic matter such as urine, mold and algae residue.
- Pau Pilau natural wetsuit cleaner is a bacterial formulation found in nature that rids neoprene of harmful organic waste.
- Pau Pilau dormant (in the bottle) once activated in water immediately seeks out organic waste as its food and energy source. When you wash a wetsuit with Pau Pilau the byproduct is water and carbon dioxide, just as in decomposition and recycling in nature.
- Pau Pilau wetsuit cleaner was discovered by an experienced surfer while working for Drainbo Natural cleaning products. Looking for a truly effective way to clean a wetsuit and deodorize it he was able to use existing technology and fine tune it to amazing effect.
More on Pau Pilau can be found at Pau Pilau wetsuit cleaner. It’s affordable (16 oz, $8.99; 32 oz, $13.99; 1 gallon, $34.00) and it works. You, your friends and your family will thank you for your purchase.
